To all who enter here:
to those who are weary and need rest;
to those who mourn and need comfort;
to those who pray and those who do not;
to those who sin and seek forgiveness;
to those who rejoice and wish to praise;
to those who are blessed and wish to serve;
To all of you, Nativity opens wide its doors and says:
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, all are welcome. No exceptions.
Nativity is an Episcopal Church and part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. In our tradition, worship is liturgical, meaning worshiping together corporately. Worshiping liturgically involves the congregation drawn together into one living expression of divine worship. This is an ancient and biblical way to pray. The liturgy makes worship something everybody does, not just the minister. It helps us when our own words fail. It ensures we receive a steady diet of God’s Word. And it reminds us every week of God’s grace in Jesus Christ.
What We Believe
Our beliefs are summed up in the historic statements of faith: The Apostle’s and Nicene Creeds. With God’s help, we endeavor to live our Baptismal Covenant daily, striving for justice and peace among all people and respecting the dignity of all human beings. Our worship is rooted in the Anglican tradition expressed in The Book of Common Prayer. We accept the 66 canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as the Word of God, containing all things necessary for salvation.
Our Mission
The Church of the Nativity is called and empowered as a community to reflect and proclaim the love of Jesus Christ in the world as we grow spiritually through worship, study, and service.
Our History
Faithful generations have gone forth into the world from the Episcopal Church of the Nativity for more than 100 years. It was in 1905 when Bishop C.M. Beckwith arrived in Dothan, Alabama, with Rev. W.N. Claybrook to organize an Episcopal Mission.
The Church was given the name Nativity to commemorate the birth of Jesus, the moment of the incarnation when The Word was made flesh. The auspicious name would be an inspiration to successive generations at Nativity as each undertook the task of manifesting the glory of God in their particular time and place.
